Unless you are an hermit, chances are you communicate every day. Whether it’s in person, on the phone, over the internet, you communicate with someone. What is that communication about anyway?
Not talking about the specific topics but have you paused and thought about the quality of that communication? and how can it be improved?
Book definition would say that communication is about the exchange of information: there is a sender, receiver, and message. But as we all know, the message is often lost or at best degraded if the sender and receiver are not on the same page.
To me, communication is about relating to others. In order for effective communication to take place, the context of how the sender and receivers are related plays a critical part. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked or taken for granted.
Think about the mis-communication between spouses, co-workers, boss-subordinates. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone we communicate with is like our buddy? In that context, we can be in synch and communicate freely and openly. Wouldn’t that be nice?
How does one go about establishing this relationship? A hint: it has something to do with emotional connection.
To be continued.
