4 mile tempo run, 2 mile warm up and 2 mile cool down.
In this base running phase of the marathon training, my goal is to build up my running volume. Last week I totaled 33 miles, this week 37 miles, and so on. And by the end of September when the marathon specific training begins, my peak week mileage will be at 50+ miles
This moderate effort affords me to detect my body’s natural rhythm and how it responds to the increasing running load. And most of all, build a strong foundation (hence the term “base”) gradually for the 20 week marathon training sans injury.
Our body is an amazing design, so long we don’t abuse it knowingly or not. I have had my share of running injuries and intend to not repeat them. The adage of mind over body is over- rated. It really is mind and body working together that brings us many happy returns.
