Personal branding is not for me.  Definitely not.  Why do I say that? you ask.

For one, I refuse to be branded.  As long as I am alive, I am free to reinvent myself.  Some would argue otherwise.  After all, products and corporations all have brands.  Why not individual.  Particularly the working professional.

The concept of personal branding was popularized by management guru Tom Peters.  When his book, “Brand You” published in 1997, it sounded good at the time (I not only bought the book, even took a class on it).

But what has all that yielded me?  Nothing.  I do believe that we should be authentic and develop ourselves from inside-out.  But human beings are much more than a product or brand (not disparaging anyone whose business is their brand).

Personal branding, to me, reduces the multifaceted human talent to commercial speak and trivializes one’s potential.  I am not for sale.  If my idea or service is valuable to others, happy to engage.  No need to brand myself.

What’s your thoughts on personal branding?

hmm personal brained is something that we sometimes allow ourselves to do, we brand ourselves o=based on what we think we are and also allow people to do the same based in what they think we are which all in all is to right. i believe in being authentic and grow so as to be better people rather than believing in what we think we are. http://lucyakaos.blog

Agree Lucy. How we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us influence how we behave. Personal branding takes this relationship to another level – much more strategic. Companies spend much resource on their brands and protect them fiercely. On a personal level I feel it is unnecessary and restricting. Thanks for sharing your comments.

I agree Nidhi that personal branding can be used as a tool to design/ refine your unique selling proposition. Especially for the working professional. Just be careful and not be slaved to the tool. Thanks for your comment.
