On the topic of trust, author and lecturer Rachel Botsman intimates that our trust with the traditional institutions (e.g. government, bank, and church) has been on a decline. This erosion of trust results from unethical conducts by these institutions.
With the advent of digital economy and technology, Botsman suggests that folks begin to branching their trust to peers networks in a decentralized or distributed direction. She gives familiar examples like the Airbnb, Uber, and Tinder.
Innovation, efficiency, and speed of these decentralized networks offer many options. However, they are not without risks. Revelations of Facebook and Yahoo breaches are cases in point. Not to mention fake news, online scams, etc.
Not sure if there is a definitive answer to the question “who do we trust.” Will it be “Blockchain,” “Nosedive,” or else, but the Russian proverb, “trust, but verify” made famous in the U.S. by Ronald Reagan still sounds good to me.
How do you tell if someone/ -thing is trustworthy?
