Day 3  Week 3 – Finishing Strong!

5 miles, easy pace the first 2 miles and the last mile with a steady run for mile 3 & 4, sunny & 65 degree.

I experienced the marathon fading described by the Greg McMillan article in my Harrisburg Marathon last year. Especially the last two miles my pace slowed to 8:50 and 9:50 respectively.  Thus I am interested about “fixing the fade.”

Greg suggests 3 fixes: 1) increase long run distance during the base phase, 2) add 4 fast finish long runs, and if still necessary 3) add one or two super long runs (24 to 28 miles).  All three are additive (i.e. try fix 1, then 2, then 3), require extraordinary efforts, and should  be implemented by modifying one’s regular training.

In a nutshell, condition the body via overloading, carefully.  Something worth considering.
