Every parent has said to their child at one time or another the Ben Franklin motivation line, “you can do anything you set your mind to.” It is the gold standard in encouragement. Close behind, I believe, and just as valid, is “to know your limitations.”
In other words, the sky may be the limit when it comes to personal achievement, planting your feet firmly is how you will get there. Otherwise, fallen enough times, anyone will become frustrated, dejected, and given up on their dreams.
So by knowing our limitations we avoid the pitfalls of tripping over ourselves. The challenge is how do we say it well (i.e. without being coming across as negative)?
