1 mile warm up + 2 x 2.5 mile race pace + 1 mile cool down, sunny & 79 degree.
The interval runs this morning was ran at my race pace based on how I felt (and then verified with watch). As it turned out my splits were: 7:26, 7:49, 3:56, 7:50, 7:56, 3:58.
The obvious issues were that my paces were inconsistent and, worse yet, too fast. Granted, these intervals were done on a track, and I had three minutes break in between. But my race pace should be around 8 minutes per mile.
Running too fast is a classic problem as the marathon is an endurance sport. Picking the right race pace and sticking to it are critical to a successful outcome. I need to relax, remind myself that the race is 26.2 miles, and re-calibrate my race pace.
How do you determine your race pace?
