Writing as a hack
A phrase that stuck in my head is a quote from Kevin Systrom, the Instagram Co-founder, “People have always been visual – our brains are wired for images. Writing was a hack, a detour.”
Systrom’s point is instructive. Writing, as a hack or detour, should not detract from the story. On the contrary, good writing evokes images, touches emotions, and needs not to be verbose.
The classic example is Ernest Hemingway’s famous short story that had only six words: For sale: baby shoes, never worn.
Nuff said.
