Like the 4 minute mile barrier shattered by Roger Bannister in 1954, today Elioud Kipochoge, the reining Olympic Gold medalist, proved that the 2 hour marathon barrier is a myth. He broke it in Vienna Austria with a time of 1 hour 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds.
Although not a race and the result unofficial in the International Association of Athletics Federations’ book, Kipochoge has done what Roger Bannister did 65 years ago. That it is possible to run that fast. Kipochoge averaged 4 minutes 34 seconds per mile for 26.2 miles.
In Kipochoge’s own words, “I believe no human is limited.” It’s only a matter of time that others will be running sub-2 marathons. Now the mold has been broken. Bannister’s record held for only 46 days.
What barriers would you like to see broken?
