Our Democratic Republic In Crisis

Back in 2017, five months after Trump was elected President, I described the election result as a social experiment that was unfurling. Fast forward to now, end of 2019, we are witnessing the articles of impeachment against the very same president in the making.

Experiment by nature is controlled. So its outcome can be determined working or not. The control variable in my mind was the checks and balances within our Constitution. Now, I am not so sure. Clearly, Trump has defied the will of the Congress, election meddling notwithstanding.

If Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader (R-Ky), acquits Trump even before the trial begins, the control variable is out of the window.  Why bother?  The impeachment trial will not serve its purpose as our Founders intended.

Furthermore, the scary part would be that US politics no longer serves the people but the party itself at the expense of our democratic republic. In other words our social experiment not only failed but failed miserably.

Do you think the Senate Leader should recuse himself?
