After 10 weeks since Mr. Trump declared a national emergency on COVID-19, the outbreak does not look anywhere near confined. As of today, 1.8M Americans have been infected and 106K died.
Understandably, people are getting antsy and looking for alternatives. With the government’s seeming inability to stamping out the virus, more scofflaws are taking liberty with their behaviors. Reports of confrontations fill social and news media.
Unprecedented decline in infrastructures, social safety-nets, and ways of life are indicative of government’s unpreparedness to deal with crisis of this nature. The effect assaults our values and challenges our beliefs.
If prolonged, chaos and dystopia will follow. Maybe this is why the Chinese government took the draconian measure to lockdown its people during the outbreak. And perhaps why Mr. Trump’s tweeted “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Is that what we want?
Stay safe & have a nice week.
