If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming. ~Dr. Haim G. Ginott
When I saw the quote above, I had a paradigm shift. You see, normally, I take people as they are and treat them accordingly. Not more & no less. That is my reality at a physical level. But what Dr. Ginott was highlighting is a higher level.
Allow me to elaborate.
As human beings, we entrust a higher level as our spiritual guide. It could be religions, arts, philosophies or some other sources. Dr. Ginott’s quote points to that spiritual level in our relationships.
Imagine if my teachers had treated me only at my physical self, treating me as whom I was, I might not have gotten any worse but certainly not any better. Thankfully, I was lifted on the shoulders and backs of my teachers, parents, and many others who saw my potential. As a result they helped me to become the person I am today.
We can accept life as is, or we can see its potential and make it better. All it takes is a perspective shift – take it to a higher level.
Do you think people will rise to expectation? Or at least deserve a chance?
