No Government Shutdown, For Now

Waking up this morning, I was happy to learn that the US government is still operating.

Today the start of a new fiscal year, the federal government without funding would have shut down services. Which means no social security checks, no access to national parks like the Washington Monument, Yellowstone and Yosemite, and no military pay, among others. The Bill authorized the funding was signed into law late yesterday to extend the government operations through 3 Dec. 2021.

The political drama was accentuated by the fact that more than one-third of the Congress voted to shut down the government: 35 US Senators and 175 Representatives (all Republicans). Of course, they can do it again comes 3 Dec or until an actual budget is passed.  But with the midterm election in 2022, their votes could risk themselves not getting re-elected.  It’s all politics.

At least for now one crisis is averted.  But no shortage of other challenges await: the debt limit, Covid-19, immigration, China and the likes.  For some adrenaline junkies that jumping from one frying pan to another is exciting.  For me, that is no way to live, let alone running the government.

How can we get back to the real politics of governing the country?
