BA.5 is a subvariant of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus. Why mention it, you ask? That is because the BA.5 is the dominant Covid-19 case in the US (and the world) right now.
The BA.5 lives true to the term “Deltacron” as it infects the lungs like the Delta version and evades/ escapes our immune defense like the Omicron. Which makes it highly transmissible even to people with previous Covid-19 or vaccination (i.e., reinfection).
The trouble with the virus’ spreading is that it will continue to replicate and mutate. To wit, the case of BA.2.75. It is so new; the scientist has little information on it. In the words of Gregory Poland, a virologist and vaccine researcher with the Mayo Clinic: “We are playing with fire.”
What can we do? Foremost, get vaccinated and boosted if that has not happened yet. Other than that, wearing mask and washing hands may sound old school, but they are what is effective.
Have you had Covid-19 or been reinfected?
