Deadline?

Washington is in high gear today. The subject: DHS (Department of Homeland Security) reform. With a funding deadline looming at Friday midnight, Democrats are leveraging the tragic weekend shooting in Minnesota an impetus to force change to the White House immigration policy.

Memories of last year’s record shutdown of 43 days still haunt the halls of Congress, leaving no one on either side of the aisle eager for a sequel. Not from Republicans, certainly not from the public. Yet, the Democrats see a rare window of opportunity to force the White House’s hand.

With four days left on the clock, the risk of the budget being derailed is high. This is quintessential Washington politics at its best: the target is clear, the path is open, the only constraint is time. As the adage goes, if it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would ever get done.
