Seeing Is Believing?

Our senses are how we gather information, shape our understanding and our reactions to the world around us. Hence, the adage, seeing is believing.  However, there are in reality limitations to our perception that could profoundly distort our beliefs.

Consider the light spectrum: what visible to human perception is only a small portion of the spectrum. We are blind to X-rays, Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and infrared light, all of them surround us with vast amount of information. While we can’t see them does not mean they doesn’t exist.  Illusionists and magicians know this well.

However, it isn’t just about entertainment. A vast and unscrupulous industry exists to exploit this vulnerability, specifically to mislead and manipulate us. The proliferation of fake news and sophisticated AI generated images/videos are prime examples. They blur the line between facts and fiction.

Fortunately, while our perception maybe limited, our minds are not. We possess the capabilities of critical thinking and reasoning. We can actively challenge what our senses present to us. Moreover, we can guard against manipulation by following the approach of trust but verify.

Whom or what do you believe?
