Heat Dome?

A “heat dome” is blanketing a huge swath of the US, bringing sweltering temperatures and heavy humidity for over two hundred million people in this first week of summer.

What’s at the root of this extreme weather? A high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere that traps heat and moisture over the region for an extended period of time. And Washington DC area is squarely within its grasp.
