Subject reality is the internal narrative through which we interpret the world. When it strays too far from the physical world (the objective reality), discrepancies arise. Our challenge is to calibrate our internal frame of reference with the external facts to “keep things real.”
This challenge becomes exponentially more difficult for high level decision makers. What is real for them? How do they manage to maintain an objective perspective instead of being influenced, or worse yet manipulated, by their inner circle of advisors? The stake is significant. Because their decisions have a consequential effect on millions of lives.
Take President Trump’s use of the pardon power for instance. How did he arrive at the decision to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who had been convicted and sentenced by a US court for drug-trafficking charges? Did the objective evidence clash with the political reality defined by personal loyalty or transactional gain?
