Word Choice Matters

The words we use reflect who we are. They are outward expressions of what deep inside: our thoughts, feelings and values. In return, we’re judged by the words we use, consciously or not.

For example, the term “crazy” may be construed as an insult. If that’s not the intention, perhaps “unusual” would be a better choice.  Granted everyone is entitled to their opinions, and freedom of expression is a given right, words have the power to either connect or harm us.

However, if the intention is to cause harm, one must be prepared to face the consequences of their actions. In a civil society ruled by law, we’re accountable for our behavior. That’s Civics 101.

Moreover, in a liberal democracy, the rhetoric of officials, political leaders, the media, and ultimately each of us contributes to our collective civil discourse. Shouldn’t we pay closer attention to how the words are used?

How would you express tolerance or compassion?
