In his pursuit of “Making America Great Again”, President Trump has not only re-ignited the trade war but also escalated it to unprecedented levels. Whether this strategy will truly achieve its intended goals remains to be seen. One thing certain is that it risks making America “ugly” again.

The term The Ugly American, popularized by the 1958 book of the same title, feels apropos today just as it did nearly seven decades ago. Back then, “fear, mistrust, and uncertainty” dominated American attitude toward the Soviet Union. Today, the same sentiments prevail. Except we bear the responsibility of being both the object and source of the negativism.

The invasion of Ukraine has lasted more than three years. Criticize Russia all you want, the US has been waging this trade war twice as long. But this time, the repercussions are felt across the globe affecting both allies and adversaries. And the potential consequences may ultimately be borne by the American businesses and citizens after all.

What do you think will be the true outcome of the trade war?
