While individuals often make decisions based on emotion, public policy must be rooted in a data-driven approach. Simply the sheer scope and magnitude of governance demands rigorous standards to ensure the public interest is served.
However this does not appear to be the practice of the current administration. President Trump often presents claims without proof or evidence to justify his policies, a trend that has clearly permeated his cabinet.
For instance, HHS is revising immunization guidelines in a way that upends long-standing precedents. DHS agents are brazenly employing deadly forces against citizens, and DoD is unilaterally seizing foreign oil tankers.
This raises a fundamental question: on what legal or empirical basis are these actions taken? The answer can’t simply be “because we want.”
