Birth and Death

We spend the vast majority of our lives focusing on “making a living,” yet, we rarely give much thought to the act of dying. Why the disparity?

From birth, we celebrate the milestone with annual intensity. Is it because each birthday represents hope and untapped potential? As such, it deserves the celebration? Memorial services, by contrast, are often viewed as ceremonies for the living. The deceased can’t reap any of the benefits.

Or can they? Does death have an intrinsic value?

In his memoir, When Breath Becomes Air, Dr. Paul Kalanithi wrote:“if we want to live authentic lives, it’s essential that we constantly project our choices against the finality of death.” He argued that our lives only possess meaning precisely because they have an end.

So if death is the frame that gives the picture its value, how often do you look at the “frame” in your daily action?

Do you consider both birth and death of equal weight?
